Handmade miniature instrument – Suka – Polish stringed bowed instrument
Suka – One of the most mysterious Polish folk instruments. A miniature model of a 4-string bowed instrument, handmade from hardwood. The instrument was used up until the end of 19th C. in Biłgoraj and around, Lubelskie province. No original instrument has survived, unfortunately. In 1990’s, using Wojciech Gerson’s watercolor from 1895, a violin-maker and a musician living near Biłgoraj, Zbigniew Butryn, worked, together with his son Krzysztof, on reconstructing the suka. Maria Pomianowska worked on such reconstruction independently in Warsaw. In 2007 the two violin-makers, Zbigniew and Krzysztof, founded the Biłgoraj Suka School in Janów Lubelski.
This miniature model is dedicated to the four people whose efforts saved the instrument from oblivion.
